Westport, CT - Not All New Constructions are McMansions - Some are Castles!

Saturday, May 15th, turned out to be a picture perfect day for the 9th Annual Castles in the Sand, at Compo Beach, in Westport, CT.

Castles in the Sand, Compo Beach

The sun was shining and temps were in the 70's, as participants competed, to create the best sand sculpture.

Masterpieces could be constructed on "Big" building lots of 10' by 10', selling for $100 or "Really Big" lots, 20' by 20', going for $300.

The competition is an annual fundraiser for Homes with Hope.  The organization was originally founded in 1984, as the Interfaith Housing Association of Westport and Weston.

Does that ever look like a bucket full of fun, or what:-)  I hope the castles disappear before the county tax assessor sees them.  Otherwise, there may be property taxes due before long:-)

These sand sculpting contests look like fun.  We have one near us at Fort Myers Beach as an annual event and some of the sculptures are mind boggling, making one say to yourself, "How'd they do that?"

P.S.  I like the lady.

Myrl-  Funny...and let's not forget the conveyance tax, a hot topic in CT.   The day was a fun way to raise money for a good cause.

Marlene- There was another entry that some labled "having your head in the sand.  Let's just say the sculture was a.. backwards.

Hi Marilyn, This sand sculpting looks like such great fun. I do hope they raised a bunch of $$ for Homes with Hope. Sounds like a great cause.  Build a few castles in my day but it seems I always built them too close to the waters edge, :-) And that would have been great for the fundraiser, LOL

William-  Brings back memories. We always built our "castles" near the water's edge.  That way we could construct impressive, sea-fed moats and decorate our turrets with squeezed, wet sand drippings.

Marilyn,

We here in the desert southwest shore miss the beach!

Mike- We're boaters so I don't spend much time "at the beach", but I like knowing it's there.
